When Does Cymbeline Take Place?

Cymbeline /ˈsɪmbɪliːn/, also known as The Tragedie of Cymbeline or Cymbeline, King of Britain, is a play by William Shakespeare set in Ancient Britain ( c. 10–14) and based on legends that formed part of the Matter of Britain concerning the early Celtic British King Cunobeline.

Where does the Cymbeline take place?

The play takes place in three different locations: Cymbeline's court is held in Roman Britain; the scenes of Posthumus' exile occur at Philario's house in Rome; and the scenes of Imogen's travels are from Wales, near Milford-Haven, where the battle scenes also happen.

Was Cymbeline a real king?

In Shakespeare's original version, however, Cymbeline is a male monarch. If Shakespeare's Cymbeline is a little known play, the historical figure is even more of an unknown monarch. Many of Shakespeare's plays are based on existing sources or history, and Cymbeline, too, is loosely based on Cunobeline, a Celtic King.
