When Does Ilsa Give Liesel the Notebook?

Three days later Ilsa Hermann shows up at the Hubermanns' door. She tells Liesel that she can write well, and gives her a little black notebook. Ilsa says that Liesel shouldn't punish herself like she did, but should perhaps try writing a book of her own.

What gift does Ilsa Hermann give Liesel?

After Liesel leaves a letter saying she will not return to the Hermann's library, Frau Hermann comes to the Hubermanns house and gives Liesel two gifts, a blank notebook and a compliment on her writing.

Why does Ilsa give Liesel a book?

In response, Ilsa writes a letter to Liesel telling her that she knows she is stealing books from the library and asking her only to come in through the front door. Ilsa eventually befriends Liesel and gives her a book in which to record her thoughts and stories, encouraging her to be a writer.
