When Does Osteolysis Occur?

Osteolysis has been reported to occur as early as 12 months after implantation and is usually progressive. This may require a revision surgery (replacement of the prosthesis).

What does osteolysis feel like?

Symptoms of distal clavicle osteolysis may include pain over the top and front part of the shoulder, tenderness, swelling, pain with lifting weights and cross arm movement, and a feeling of weakness in the shoulder. Chronic inflammation may occur along with formation of scar tissue (fibrosis).

How can osteolysis be prevented?

Land exercises such as brisk walking, stretching exercises and yoga postures done under supervision are helpful in preventing osteolysis. High impact exercises or contact sports are best avoided as they increase your risk for broken bones.
