When Does Pre Labor Happen?

What is preterm labor? A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks. Preterm labor is labor that starts before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Going into preterm labor does not automatically mean that a woman will have a preterm birth.

What are signs of pre labor?

Signs and symptoms of preterm labor include:
  • Regular or frequent sensations of abdominal tightening (contractions)
  • Constant low, dull backache.
  • A sensation of pelvic or lower abdominal pressure.
  • Mild abdominal cramps.
  • Vaginal spotting or light bleeding.

Is 37 weeks considered preterm?

If a woman goes into labor before 37 weeks, it is called preterm labor. Late preterm babies who are born between 35 and 37 weeks gestation may not look premature. They may not be admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), but they are still at risk for more problems than full-term babies.
