Tapotement is the rapid, percussive tapping, slapping and cupping of the massaged area. It is used to more aggressively work and strengthen deep-tissue muscles. It increases local blood circulation and can even help tone muscle areas. Tapotement is often used to warm-up athletes before an event.
What is Tapotement used for?
It is primarily used to "wake up" the nervous system and also as a stimulating stroke which can release lymphatic build up in the back. The name of the stroke is taken from the French word "Tapoter", meaning to tap or to drum.
When should Tapotement not be used?
Tapotement movements may be applied to the fleshy parts of the body, e.g. buttocks, but are not appropriate on all areas of the body or in all circumstances. In particular, percussion movements should not be used as indicated below: not directly over bony pertuberances. not over surface (superficial) nerves.
