When to Change Snares?

Drummers often walk into the shop with the following complaint: “My snare doesn't sound right.” Even though you don't usually hit the bottom head or snare wires, both should be changed every second or third time you change the batter head, depending on your playing style.

Do snare wires wear out?

Wire snares will last forever if the individual strands are not broken or bent out of shape from getting snagged on something.

How do I know if my snare wire is bad?

There are two easy ways to spot a bad set of snare wires. First, look for damage, including broken or warped strands. Individual strands that are not straight have more room to move and will vibrate longer than desired. The wires of this snare are warped, and caused excessive buzz.
