When to Do Endodontic Retreatment?

If your tooth failed to heal or develops new problems, you have a second chance. An additional procedure may be able to support healing and save your tooth. If you have pain or discomfort in a previously treated tooth, talk to an endodontist about retreatment.

When should you retreat a root canal?

A root canal retreatment may be necessary if a previously root canal treated tooth fails to heal or if a recurrent infection is evident. Root canal treatment has a very high rate of success, but as with other medical or dental procedures, infection or inflammation may persist or recur despite our best efforts.

Why would you have to retreat a root canal?

Many times, when the infection reenters from the top of the tooth, that is because the restoration originally placed wasn't sealed perfectly well. Either way, when bacteria reenters the canal, you'll need to either have a retreat root canal or have the tooth extracted.
