Damaged, misplaced and diseased stems should be removed, with the remained thinned out if necessary. As specimens mature they may need renovating by cutting out one-in-three stems, starting with the oldest. After a three-year period, the whole shrub will have been rejuvenated.
When should Amelanchier trees be pruned?
For Amelanchier laevis, Amelanchier lamarckii, Amelanchier grandiflorus and Amelanchier stolonifera, general pruning can be carried out in late Winter – but only for diseased, untidy, and crossing branches. Any major surgery at this time of year will cut off the flowering growths for the incoming Spring.
