Damar is a resin-based varnish that, when mixed with oil paint mediums, thins the paint, increases its transparency, and speeds drying time. Used alone as a top coat, it seals paintings and adds a glossy finish. Be sure, though, that your painting is thoroughly dry before applying it as a final varnish.
Should I use dammar varnish?
For many a 5lb cut of dammar varnish is a staple of the studio, as it can facilitate many a painter's need. High gloss mediums, glazing mediums, oil mediums and wax mediums can all be formulated with dammar as a base. So for those curious about making their own unique mixes, a dammar varnish is a good place to start.
How long does it take for dammar varnish to dry?
Full drying generally takes between 3-6 months although it can take longer with extremely thick paint films (5mm or thicker). If needing a temporary protective varnish before full drying has taken place apply Retouch Varnish.
