When to Use Fluoridated Toothpaste?

When to Use Fluoride Toothpaste
You can start using toothpaste with fluoride when your children begin to get their baby teeth. However, it's important to only use the right amount based on their age. Otherwise, they could end up swallowing fluoridated toothpaste.

Why use fluoridated toothpaste?

After teeth erupt, fluoride helps rebuild (remineralize) weakened tooth enamel and reverses early signs of tooth decay. When you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, or use other fluoride dental products, the fluoride is applied to the surface of your teeth. This provides what is called a "topical" benefit.

When should you start using toothpaste?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends using cavity-preventing fluoride toothpaste starting with baby's very first tooth, rather than waiting until age 2 as was previously recommended. Use a rice-grain-sized smear of toothpaste for your baby or toddler, graduating to a pea-sized dollop by age 3.
