As a business owner, you get to determine the pricing for the products and services you sell. If you want to make a profit, you need to mark up the price of your products or services and sell them at a price that's higher than the cost of goods and labor.
Should you use markup or margin?
Generally, a profit making business should have a markup percentage that is higher than the margin percentage. If your markup is lower than the margin, this means that your business is making losses. The relationship between markup and margin is not an arbitrary one.
What is difference between margin and markup?
Both profit margin and markup use revenue and costs as part of their calculations. The main difference between the two is that profit margin refers to sales minus the cost of goods sold while markup to the amount by which the cost of a good is increased in order to get to the final selling price.
