A microbalance is a tool used in laboratories and in scientific research with the capacity to make accurate measurements of the weight of very small objects, with a resolution in the order of a millionth of a gram. The instrument is considered to be the highest precision of all kinds of lab balances.
Why is microbalance more sensitive than analytical balance?
Sensitivity. Micro balances can take a precise measurement of weight of an object of relatively small mass, such as a million parts of a gram. Comparatively, a standard analytical balance is 100 times less sensitive. Micro balances are also very sensitive to exposure to air currents, dust, and thermal fluctuation.
How do micro balances work?
A tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) is an instrument used for real-time detection of aerosol particles by measuring their mass concentration. It makes use of a small vibrating glass tube whose oscillation frequency changes when aerosol particles are deposited on it.
