When Was Elsevier Established?

Elsevier is a Netherlands-based publishing company specializing in scientific, technical, and medical content. It is a part of the RELX Group, known until 2015 as Reed Elsevier.

Who started Elsevier?

1880. Jacobus Robbers joins hands with four other businessmen in founding modern Elsevier in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Inspired by the historical publishers, they adopt their name and the Non Solus printer's mark – meaning “not alone” – which highlights the relationship between authors and publishers.

What's wrong with Elsevier?

We are seeing national boycotts of Elsevier and rejection of Elsevier journal bundles. Just recently, Swedish and German research institutes announced that they were cancelling all Elsevier subscriptions due to concerns about sustainability, unfair pricing arrangements and a general lack of value.
