When Was Lyddie Independent

In 1843, Lyddie Worthen, an impoverished Vermont farm girl, is determined to gain her independence (and money to pay off the debts of the farm). Her father left the farm to earn money, but has not been heard from since.

How is Lyddie determine?

Lyddie is determined to never be beholden to anyone. She does not want to have to rely on others and insists on doing everything herself. She takes on the family debt single-handedly, believing that it is her responsibility and not her brother’s or her mother’s.

How has Lyddie changed throughout the book?

Lyddie remains a hard worker throughout the entire book, so there is no change there; what changes is who and what Lyddie is willing to work for. For much of the novel, Lyddie feels obligated to work herself to the bone in order to earn enough money to help pay off the family debt.
