When did they flood Rutland Water?

Hambleton and the Lost Village beneath Rutland Water

When the valley was flooded in 1976 to create Rutland Water (known to begin with as Empingham Reservoir after the Parish of Empingham that surrounds it), only Upper Hambleton and part of Middle Hambleton were left and these are now known as Hambleton.

Why was Rutland Water flooded?

The Rutland Water reservoir was officially opened in 1976 after two villages were controversially flooded to create it. When the dam was built it submerged the villages of Middle and Nether Hambleton at the eastern end of the Gwash valley near Stamford.
