Rubber erasers became common with the advent of vulcanization. On March 30, 1858, Hymen Lipman of Philadelphia, USA, received the first patent for attaching an eraser to the end of a pencil. It was later invalidated because it was determined to be simply a composite of two devices rather than an entirely new product.
When were kneaded erasers invented?
In 1839, inventor Charles Goodyear solved these problems by inventing a method of curing the rubber known as vulcanization. This process made rubber more durable and allowed for the eraser to become a household item. It is also around the time that the handy kneaded eraser was invented.
Who invented the pencil with attached eraser?
And now a page from our "Sunday Morning" Almanac: March 30th, 1858, 156 years ago today . . . the day a Philadelphia inventor made his mark. For that was the day Hyman Lipman patented the first pencil with its own eraser . . .a strip of rubber embedded in the end that had to be sharpened just like the graphite point.
