A watershed, or drainage basin, is the area that collects water for a stream. As smaller streams flow downhill, they often merge together to form larger streams. These smaller streams are called tributaries. Streams create channels by wearing down rock and carrying it and other sediment downstream.
Where do streams begin?
All rivers and streams start at some high point. The high point can be a mountain, hill, or other elevated area. Water from some source like a spring, snow melt, or a lake starts at this high point and begins to flow down to lower points.
Where do streams come together?
A stream may have more than one sources and when two streams come together it's called a confluence. The smaller of the two streams is a tributary of the larger stream.
