Planaria (Platyhelminthes) are free-living flatworms that live in freshwater. They are typically found under rocks and debris in streams, ponds, and springs. Planarians are interesting to study for a variety of reasons.
Is Planaria found in gut?
Most flatworms, such as the planarian shown in Figure 1, have a gastrovascular cavity rather than a complete digestive system. In such animals, the “mouth” is also used to expel waste materials from the digestive system. Some species also have an anal opening. The gut may be a simple sac or highly branched.
Is Planaria harmful to humans?
While they pose no danger to humans or plants, Land Planarians have been labeled a nuisance in the southern United States in particular, and have been known to decimate earthworm populations in farms and earthworm rearing beds.
