The most common North American species is Nereis limnicola, found on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. N. virens, which may be as long as 80 cm (31.5 inches), occurs on both sides of the North Atlantic. Some rag worms are commonly used by fishermen for bait.
Where do you find Ragworms?
Ragworm can be found on a wide range of beaches made up of mud, sand or clay. They live in U-shaped burrows between the high and low water marks, and can be identified by a pair of small holes in the sand which mark their burrows.
Do rag worms only live on land?
Ragworms are predominantly marine organisms that may occasionally swim upstream to rivers and even climb to land (for example Lycastopsis catarractarum). They are commonly found in all water depths, foraging in seaweeds, hiding under rocks or burrowing in sand or mud.
