Where Did Social Work Start

Professional social work originated in 19th century England, and had its roots in the social and economic upheaval wrought by the Industrial Revolution, in particular the societal struggle to deal with the resultant mass urban-based poverty and its related problems.

Since the first social work class was offered in the summer of 1898 at Columbia University, social workers have led the way developing private and charitable organizations to serve people in need. Social workers continue to address the needs of society and bring our nation’s social problems to the public’s attention.

Where was the first school of social work based?

The very first school of social work, with a two-year full-time programme, was established in Amsterdam in 1899, but the real beginnings of social work education are found in Octavia Hill’s training of volunteers in housing management and ‘friendly visiting’ in the 1870s.
