Habitat and Diet: Muskrats generally inhabit wetlands with an abundant supply of aquatic vegetation, such as swamps, coastal and freshwater marshes, lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams.
Where do muskrats live in the US?
They mostly inhabit wetlands, areas in or near saline and freshwater wetlands, rivers, lakes, or ponds. They are not found in Florida, where the round-tailed muskrat, or Florida water rat (Neofiber alleni), fills their ecological niche.
Where do muskrats make their homes?
They typically make their homes in marshes, swamps and wetlands. They particularly like marshes. Hot, dry weather is bad for muskrats, which is why they prefer wet areas and cool burrows dug on the banks of water sources.
