Where Does a Dabchick Live?

The dabchick, or weweia is a specialised waterbird endemic to New Zealand. They are currently extinct from the South Island but they can be found around the Central North Island in Taupo and Rotorua.

Habitat. Least Grebes are most common on small freshwater ponds and lakes, especially those with emergent and aquatic vegetation, which provides both good foraging habitat and places to hide from predators. They also use ephemeral (temporary) ponds, brackish wetlands, mangrove swamps, and sluggish rivers.
