The names of Michel-Gabriel Paccard (1757-1827), Jacques Balmat (1762-1834), and Horace-Bénédict de Saussure (1740-1799) and their initial climbs up the 15,771-ft (4,807 m) tall Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe, are often cited as the starting point for the present-day sport of mountaineering, or alpinism.

1760 - Alpinism is invented. The Genevan naturalist, Horace Bénédict de Saussure, offered a large reward to anyone who could find the way up Mont Blanc. On the 24th July he visited "Chamouny" and climbed up to the Brevent.
Where did mountain climbers originate?
The sport and recreational pastime of mountain climbing began in the European Alps in the mid-nineteenth century. It grew out of a complex combination of exploration, tourism, and scientific fieldwork, all of which were beginning to take larger numbers of people to the summits of mountains.
