Where Does Ascites Come from?

Ascites Causes
Ascites happens when pressure builds up in the veins of your liver and it doesn't work as it should. These two problems usually are caused by another condition -- cirrhosis, heart or kidney failure, cancer, or an infection. The pressure blocks blood flow in the liver.

Where does the fluid come from in ascites?

In people with a liver disorder, ascitic fluid leaks from the surface of the liver and intestine and accumulates within the abdomen.

Why does ascites occur?

The most common cause of ascites is cirrhosis of the liver. Drinking too much alcohol is one of the most common causes of cirrhosis of the liver. Different types of cancer can also cause this condition. Ascites caused by cancer most often occur with advanced or recurrent cancer.
