Habitat. The cold environments that psychrophiles inhabit are ubiquitous on Earth, as a large fraction of our planetary surface experiences temperatures lower than 15 °C. They are present in permafrost, polar ice, glaciers, snowfields and deep ocean waters.
Where is Psychrophilic found?
Psychrophiles grow best at temperatures < 15 °C. In nature, they are commonly found in deep ocean waters or in polar regions. Mesophiles, which grow between 15 and 45 °C, are the most common types of microorganisms and include most pathogenic species.
Where are Hyperthermophiles found?
The most extreme hyperthermophiles live on the superheated walls of deep-sea hydrothermal vents, requiring temperatures of at least 90 °C for survival.
