Where Does Schizogony Occur?

The process of schizogony occurs entirely inside the confines of a host cell: either an erythrocyte in blood-stage schizogony or a hepatocyte in hepatic schizogony.

Where does schizogony happen?

Two distinct types of merogony are observed. The first, called exoerythrocytic schizogony, occurs in the liver and is initiated by the sporozoite. The resulting merozoites then invade erythrocytes and undergo repeated rounds of merogony called erythrocytic schizogony.

Where does schizogony in Plasmodium take place?

In Plasmodium gallinaceum, parasitic in domestic fowls, in addition to the schizogony in red blood corpuscles, schizogony also occurs in monocytes and cells of the reticulo-endothelial system. This schizogony in cells other than erythrocytes may be termed, for convenience, exo-erythrocytic schizogony.
