Why do they call 405 to San Diego Freeway?

So in LA, if you are coming from the north, the way around LA is the 405. So as you approach from say San Francisco, on the “5” which heads through the middle of LA, and you want to miss that jam, you would take the way around to go to “San Diego” even if you just wanted to get to Long Beach.
