A pacemaker insertion is the implantation of a small electronic device that is usually placed in the chest (just below the collarbone) to help regulate slow electrical problems with the heart. A pacemaker may be recommended toensure that the heartbeat does not slow to a dangerously low rate.
Where is the pacemaker located in the heart?
Your heart's sinus node is your natural pacemaker (found in the upper right chamber of the heart, known as the atrium). It sends an electrical impulse to make your heart beat. The job of a pacemaker is to artificially take over the role of your sinus node if it's not working properly.
How long does a pacemaker operation take?
The procedure usually takes about an hour, but it may take longer if you're having a biventricular pacemaker with 3 leads fitted or other heart surgery at the same time. You'll usually need to stay in hospital overnight and have a day's rest after the procedure.
