The aluminosilicate backbone of nepheline has a fairly open structure of interlocked six-member rings. This resembles the structure of tridymite, with aluminum substituting for every other silicon atom. If favorable conditions exist for the water vapor formed in the heating process to be retained within the gibbsite particles (coarse gibbsite particles; high heating rate; previous presence of water vapour in the system), boehmite is formed.
