Where Is Equine Encephalitis Virus?

Eastern equine encephalitis is typically found in the eastern United States (as far west as Wisconsin), and in the south along the Gulf Coast. The risk of an outbreak in humans is low in Minnesota. No human cases have been reported here but a very small number of cases in horses have been reported in the past.

Where is EEE found?

From 2010-2019, most cases of EEE have been reported from Massachusetts, Michigan, Florida, Georgia, New York, and North Carolina. EEEV transmission is most common in and around freshwater hardwood swamps in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast states and the Great Lakes region.

Is Equine Encephalitis the same as West Nile virus?

A: The symptoms of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) are similar to those seen with West Nile virus. Both can go undetected. Symptoms come on abruptly and include fever, headache, muscle and joint aches.
