Where Is Fort Keogh?

Fort Keogh is a former United States Army post located at the western edge of modern Miles City, in the U.S. state of Montana. It is situated on the south bank of the Yellowstone River, at the mouth of the Tongue River.

Who was Fort Keogh named after?

The 100 section (64,000 acres) Fort was named after Captain Myles Keogh, an adjutant to General Custer at the Battle. The initial commander of Fort Keogh was General Nelson Miles for whom Miles City is named. In 1907, all infantry troops were withdrawn from the Fort and in 1909 it was designated a Remount Station.

How did Miles City get its name?

Fort Keogh, like many other forts in Montana, brought with it the formation of a small trading town nearby. This town named itself Miles City after Colonel N.A. Miles, the Commanding Officer at the fort.
