Inversion layers can occur anywhere from close to ground level up to thousands of feet into the atmosphere. Inversion layers are significant to meteorology because they block atmospheric flow which causes the air over an area experiencing an inversion to become stable.
Where is inversion layer observed?
An inversion layer is a region or layer of the atmosphere in which the temperature stops decreasing with elevation and instead becomes warmer. These are a significant factor in the formation of smog, a type of pollution often seen over densely populated cities such as Los Angeles and Mexico City.
Where are temperature inversions most likely to occur?
- 25% or less cloud cover.
- Light and variable winds (especially below 3 mph)
- Dry soil surface.
- Low elevation areas such as valleys and basins where cool air can sink and collect – Inversions will begin sooner, last longer, and be more intense in these areas.
