It is the primary operating system for Apple’s Mac computers. Within the market of desktop, laptop and home computers, and by web usage, it is the second most widely used desktop OS, after Windows NT.

For example, you can use it to browse the Internet, check your email, edit digital photos, listen to music, and play games. macOS is also used in some offices because it gives you access to productivity tools such as calendars, word processors, and spreadsheets.

Is Mac using Linux?

You may have heard that Macintosh OSX is just Linux with a prettier interface. That’s not actually true. But OSX is built in part on an open source Unix derivative called FreeBSD. And until recently, FreeBSD’s co-founder Jordan Hubbard served as director of Unix technology at Apple.
