Where Osteocytes Are Found?

Compact Bone
Between the rings of matrix, the bone cells (osteocytes) are located in spaces called lacunae. Small channels (canaliculi) radiate from the lacunae to the osteonic (haversian) canal to provide passageways through the hard matrix.

Are osteocytes found in spongy bone?

Spongy (Cancellous) Bone. Like compact bone, spongy bone, also known as cancellous bone, contains osteocytes housed in lacunae, but they are not arranged in concentric circles. Instead, the lacunae and osteocytes are found in a lattice-like network of matrix spikes called trabeculae (singular = trabecula) ((Figure)).

What is the function and location of osteocytes?

Osteocytes are cells that are located within the bone that are responsible for bone health. They are stellate shaped cells that have many processes extending from their cell body which they use to communicate with neighboring osteocytes.
