The placenta attaches to the wall of your uterus, and your baby's umbilical cord arises from it. The organ is usually attached to the top, side, front or back of the uterus. In rare cases, the placenta might attach in the lower area of the uterus.

It is usually located along the anterior or posterior uterine walls, extending into the lateral walls. The midportion of the placenta typically measures from 2 to 4 cm. It may show a few focal sonographic lucencies with slow flow, which are called venous lakes.

Hospitals treat placentas as medical waste or biohazard material. The newborn placenta is placed in a biohazard bag for storage. Some hospitals keep the placenta for a period of time in case the need arises to send it to pathology for further analysis.
