Where Vaal River Is Located?

Vaal River, northern tributary of the Orange River, South Africa. Rising at Sterkfontein Beacon near Breyten, in Mpumalanga province, it flows 750 miles (1,210 km) southwest to its confluence with the Orange near Douglas; the Vaal's middle section forms most of the Free State's northern provincial boundary.

Why is it called Vaal River?

The Dutch named it Vaal, which means “drab” or “dull”, because of its brown-grey colour. But they obviously weren't into water sports. These days, there's nothing dull about the river at all. The Vaal River is divided into three areas: the Upper Vaal, Middle Vaal and the Lower Vaal.

Which ocean does the Vaal River flow?

The Vaal River, South Africa's longest river after the Orange, is a key water source for the country. Its source is at Klipkapstel in Mpumalanga from where it flows to Douglas in the Northern Cape. Here it meets the mighty Orange River, which flows west into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay.
