Which Cells Have Lignin?

Lignin is deposited mainly in tracheids, vessels, fibres of xylem and phloem and sclerenchyma. However, lignin composition varies among species, phylogenetic groups, cell types, developmental stages and even seasonal growth.

Where is lignin found?

Lignin is found in the middle lamella, as well as in the secondary cell wall of xylem vessels and the fibers that strengthen plants. It is also found in epidermal and occasionally hypodermal cell walls of some plants.

Which cell has lignin deposition?

Sclerenchyma cells

The function of these cells is to strengthen the central axis of plant organs mechanically against gravity, mechanical disturbances and physical damage (Fig. 1). The sclerenchyma fibres and sclereids have lignified secondary cell walls mainly composed of S-units (Higuchi, 1990).
