Static exciters contain no moving parts. A portion of the AC from each phase of generator output is fed back to the field windings, as DC excitations, through a system of transformers, rectifiers, and reactors. An external source of DC is necessary for initial excitation of the field windings.
How many types of exciter are there?
There are nineteen different excitation types in three major groups: Direct Current Commutator Exciters (type DC), Alternator Supplied Rectifier Excitation Systems (type AC) and Static Excitation Systems (type ST).
Why is static excitation?
Advantages of Static Excitation System
Since excitation energy is directly taken from generator output terminals therefore excitation voltage is directly proportional to the Generator speed. This improves the overall system performance.
