Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, is an eye condition that causes blurry distance vision.
What is the term for nearsightedness?
Myopia. Commonly known as nearsightedness, myopia is the opposite of hyperopia. It is a condition in which an image of a distant object becomes focused in front the retina. This happens either because the eyeball axis is too long, or because the refractive power of the eye is too strong.
Why is it called nearsightedness?
Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long, relative to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye. This causes light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina, rather than directly on its surface.
