Who Discovered Tiger Eye?

Mineralogists discovered tigers eye in western South Africa in the early 1800's. In 1873, German mineralogist Ferdinand Wibel found the gemstone to be almost entirely quartz with fibers of crocidolite while studying the blue form of the stone, "Hawks Eye". It was believed tigers eye was a pseudomorph.

The major source of Tiger's Eye is Griquatown West, in South Africa. It is also found at Wittenoom Gorge, Western Australia.
