In 1723, Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon credited as the Father of Modern Dentistry, published his influential book, The Surgeon Dentist, a Treatise on Teeth, which for the first time defined a comprehensive system for caring for and treating teeth.
What did people believe caused tooth decay?
Historically, tooth decay was thought to be the result of an evil tooth worm that gnawed holes into the tooth enamel. Today, however, we know that tooth decay is largely caused by improper oral hygiene habits which allow the bacteria in our mouths to fester and become plaque or tartar.
