Who Founded San Benito

Pioneers built schools and churches, formed clubs and held dances and even put on a “Hog Waddle.” Over 100 hundred years have passed since San Benito’ founding and naming by Colonel Sam Robertson (shown left) and his business colleagues.

How did San Benito get its name?

The name San Benito was concocted by Rafael Moreno, an employee of Hicks. Moreno combined the given names of Robertson (Sam or “San”) and Hicks (Benny), whom he called “Don Benito.” A post office was established in 1907 under the name San Benito.
