A 22-year-old employee at a residential treatment facility for adolescents in southern Utah was detained and accused of raping and sexually abusing teenage students who attended the facility’s school.

After a month-long investigation into allegations of sexual assault, Paul Anthony Nichols was detained last week. Two of the victims, who are students at Lava Heights Academy in Toquerville, Utah, said to the police that Nichols had touched them indecently a few days after starting his job there.

The alleged assault took place in mid-September during a game of “truth or dare.” A 15-year-old girl who claimed to have been his first victim said that Nichols had joined her and two other students in a game of truth or dare one evening.

Nichols was given the “dare” to kiss all three of them throughout the game. The victim said that the accused pursued her into the restroom and started kissing her as soon as she entered. She said that she gave her consent to be kissed at first and that Nichols afterward touched her inappropriately when they were “making out.”

The young victim admitted that the same thing happened in the residential treatment center’s restroom on four additional occasions on various nights. The claimed abuse allegedly increased in severity each time she was compelled to touch Nichols improperly and each time he did the same.

He is from St. George and is 22 years old. He was charged and questioned by police on Thursday, and he acknowledged the allegations against him by the teenagers. On that day, he was registered with the Washington County Jail. A judge ordered him to remain in custody without bail on Friday.

The Lava Heights facility, which bills itself as a “residential treatment center for troubled teens,” claims that Nichols maintained a “special position of trust” over the female patients. He was in charge of watching after them when the alleged assault occurred.

Paul Anthony Nichols has been accused of eight different offenses in Utah’s Fifth District Court. In addition to two counts of sexual exploitation of minors, there is one case of rape and five counts of forceful sexual abuse.
