Who Needs an Epirb

EPIRBs are imperative for boaters who travel long distances in large bodies of water, and are important safety devices when all other forms of communication fail. Not all boats have an EPIRB equipped upon purchase, so this should be among your first five buys before getting underway.

Do I need an EPIRB or PLB?

Every boat should have some kind of 406 MHz distress beacon. If you have a small boat like a kayak, SUP, canoe, bass boat or even a pontoon boat, consider a Personal Locator Beacon. If you are going offshore, an EPIRB is the right beacon.

What vessels are required to carry an EPIRB?

A Category 1 EPIRB that will float-free and automatically activate is required on vessels 36 feet or more in length.
