What is Barbarella based on?

“Barbarella” was based on a comic strip that was serialized in a French men’s magazine in the early 1960s, created by artist Jean-Claude Forest. When the collected strips were published as a stand-alone book in 1964, a scandal ensued when it was deemed pornographic even though it was, at best, slightly erotic.
