The blue morpho is among the largest butterflies in the world, with wings spanning from five to eight inches. Their vivid, iridescent blue coloring is a result of the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings, which reflect light.
Are all morpho butterflies blue?
Blue morpho butterfly: males vs. females (What's the difference?) In all morpho species, only the males are all blue. Depending on the species, female morphos range in color from brown and yellow to partial iridescent blue (but notably less than the males).
Why does the morpho butterfly appear blue even at wide angles?
The blue structural color is caused mainly from thin film interference due to the tree like structures on the scales. The irregularity in the ridge height of the rows of tree like structures results in a diffuse and uniformly blue color with viewing angle.
