A bigger cello means more air inside the cello and a lower fundamental frequency. So lower tuning would necessitate a bigger cello. For a myriad of reasons, the note A kept rising. Eventually the big cellos were out of range of the sympathetic vibrations they needed to play well.
Is the cello big?
Cello. The cello looks like the violin and viola but is much larger (around 4 feet long), and has thicker strings than either the violin or viola. Of all the string instruments, the cello sounds most like a human voice, and it can make a wide variety of tones, from warm low pitches to bright higher notes.
Can an adult play a small cello?
Cellists have options if they require a smaller instrument. While 3/4 size cellos are too small and often don't produce the tone desired by an adult player, there are many cellos made in 7/8 size, many of which can often sound as rich and full as a full size (4/4) cello if properly made and set up.
