Short answer: Blue ones have been sent or received using Apple’s iMessage technology, while green ones are “traditional” text messages exchanged via Short Messaging Service, or SMS.
What do the different colors on Android text messages mean?
Light blue means they’re being sent by standard SMS/MMS and dark blue means they’re the new RCS format which Google just rolled out (kinda like Apple’s iMessage format but the 2 aren’t actually compatible with each other).
Why did the color change on my text messages?
It appears to me that in a single chat session if you or your respondant send two or more messages in a row without a response then they turn colors to let you know that your first message has not been answered. If they respond then the original color returns.
