The tiger shrimp is known to be susceptible to 16 diseases and is capable of transferring them to other shrimp species (Humans are not at risk). Disease and predation from the invasive tiger prawn can have a devastating effect on harvesting native shrimp species resulting in an economic loss for shrimp fishermen.

Where are tiger shrimp harvested?

Tiger shrimp are being captured—largely in shrimp trawls—in estuaries and the coastal ocean from North Carolina to Texas. Most are collected in the late summer. Their preferred depth ranges from 0 to 110 meters, primarily in sandy or muddy bottoms.

Many countries supply black tigers from both farmed and wild sources. The species is distributed over a huge range, from east and southeast Africa through the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, around the Indian subcontinent and through the Malay Archipelago to northern Australia and the Philippines.
