Why Be on City Council?

The Council fulfils the legislative functions of the city, crafting ordinances and developing policies. They are also tasked with establishing the overall direction of the city and providing general direction to the city manager.

Why do we need City Council?

Aldermen, or councilors, generally act as the legislative branch of the city government, as well as its policy-making body. The council also looks to the city's goals, major projects and infrastructure improvements ranging from community growth to land use to finances and strategic planning.

What does the local city council do?

General Information. The City Council is the governing body of the City, except as otherwise provided in the Charter, and enacts ordinances subject to the approval or veto of the Mayor. It orders elections, levies taxes, authorizes public improvements, approves contracts, and adopts traffic regulations.
